Day 2: Kinnoull and Deuchny

Monday 3rd August 2009

Map extract of Kinnoull Hill.

A favourite orienteering area for many years, right on the edge of Perth, on the cliff-edged hills towering above the highest tidal reaches of the Tay.

There are three distinct parts to the forest. Kinnoull Hill is mainly deciduous woodland, with an intricate network of paths, plenty of contour detail and some old quarry workings. Deuchny is a coniferous forest with a variety of contour detail; and, to the east, the longer courses will visit Murrayshall, an area of mainly open moorland.

Parking and assembly is on the east side of the area, giving a different approach to many previous events here.

Essential Details

Below is essential information to help you plan your journey to Day 2. However we strongly recommend you check the Event Programme for full details of arrangements for Day 2.

Directions from Event Centre (Perth Racecourse): Leave Perth Racecourse and follow the A93 south into Perth. Note that traffic may be slow moving through the town, especially in the morning rush hour. Carry straight on following the A85 and signs for Dundee, out of the town to the A90 dual carriage-way. 2 miles (3kms) after the A85 / A90 junction take the left slip road at the Kinfauns junction. Follow the minor roads for 2 miles (3kms) to the parking area.

Alternatively, to avoid congestion in Perth, leave Perth Racecourse and cross the A93 towards Scone (note this is an offset junction – turn right onto the A93 and immediately left on the Scone road). At Scone, turn left onto the A94. After 2 miles (3kms) turn right at Perth Airport onto a minor road. Follow minor roads for 5 miles (8kms) as sign-posted to the parking area.

Traffic from the east should leave the A90 at the Kinfauns junction 2 miles (3 kms) east of Perth and follow the minor roads for 2 miles (3kms) to the parking area.

Please do not use the minor road from Perth via Muirhall Road / Murray Royal Hospital as this goes through the competition area. Please also note that camper vans will not be permitted to park in the car park.

As there is only a single track road in and out of the parking area all competitors must arrive before 1230 hrs. NO EXIT BEFORE 1230 hrs.

Approximate distance from Event Centre: 13km/8miles.

Distance from Car Park to Assembly: Adjacent (Buses 750m).

Distance from Assembly to Starts: Red/Blue/Green/Yellow 1300m; White 650m.

Nearest places of interest: Perth, Scone Palace.
