Map extract of Tullochroisk

In the Perthshire highlands, Tullochroisk sits on the northern flanks of Schiehallion, one of Scotland’s best-known and prominent mountains, and on the south bank of the River Tummel, one of the major tributaries of the Tay.

The area is of historic interest to orienteers, because it was on the conical peak of Schiehallion, as part of an experiment to verify Newton’s theory of gravity and to estimate the mass of the earth in 1775, that mathematician Charles Hutton hit on the idea of measuring the shape and size of a mountain by drawing lines joining up points of equal height - so inventing contours.

Tullochroisk was the venue for the Jan Kjellstrom relays in 2000.  For Tay 2009 the orienteering area has been nearly doubled to include some interesting open land and a block of forest terrain to the south of the original map, resulting in an area of great variety, with open moorland, coniferous forest and areas of birch woods.  Some parts are rough and challenging, some grazed and fast running. Large hills will create route choice dilemmas and smaller complex contour features will test fine navigation skills.

Essential Details

Below is essential information to help you plan your journey to Day 3. However we strongly recommend you check the Event Programme for full details of arrangements for Day 3.

Directions from Event Centre (Perth Racecourse): This is likely to take at least 90 minutes, due to slow roads. To reduce congestion, so please car-share wherever possible.

The recommended route from Perth Racecourse is to join the A9 at Perth and follow this north.  Leave Perth Racecourse and follow the A93 south into Perth, and from the town centre follow signs for Inverness (A912/A9).

There are alternative routes via the A93 and A984 to Dunkeld; however turning right onto the A9 at Dunkeld may take a considerable time due to the heavy volume of traffic on the A9.

For all routes follow the A9 for 8 miles (13km) north from Dunkeld and turn left at Ballinluig onto the A827 slip road, signposted Aberfeldy. At the roundabout at the end of the slip road take the exit onto the A827 signposted to Aberfeldy.  Follow this road for 10 miles (16km) to Aberfeldy. Turn right in Aberfeldy and follow the B846 for 9 miles (15km) and turn left onto a minor road (the Schiehallion Road). The parking area is a further 4 miles (6km) along this road.

As there is only a single track road in and out of the parking area all competitors must arrive before 1230 hrs. NO EXIT BEFORE 1230 hrs.

Approximate distance from Event Centre: 80km/50miles.

Distance from Car Park to Assembly: up to 500m (Buses 1500m; overflow car park 2500m).

Distance from Assembly to Starts: Red/Blue/Green/Yellow 2100m (110m climb); White 300m.

Nearest places of interest: Kinloch Rannoch, Tummel Bridge, Pitlochry, Blair Atholl, Aberfeldy.
