Day 6: Loch Ordie

Saturday 8th August 2009

Map extract of Loch Ordie.

Another totally new area for orienteering and a fitting end to Tay 2009. This area lies on the eastern slopes of the Tay valley, stretching from the hills just above the A9 into a maze of hills and ridges where roads seem a million miles away. This area is mostly open with scattered trees and lightly wooded areas.

The lower slopes are rough grazing with a complex pattern of boundaries, then a slope with some paths and many rock features.  The higher parts have a series of small and larger parallel ridges, crags, boulders and marshes, reminiscent of nearby Craig a’Barns but with fewer trees.

Loch Ordie, which gives its name to the area, is in a secluded corrie on the south west part of the map.  The views into the corrie and to the loch with a panorama of rolling hills behind may be a distraction from concentration on navigation.

Dogs: we regret that, at the request of the landowners, dogs will not be permitted at Loch Ordie.

Essential Details

Below is essential information to help you plan your journey to Day 6. However we strongly recommend you check the Event Programme for full details of arrangements for Day 6.

Directions from Event Centre (Perth Racecourse): The recommended route from Perth Racecourse is to join the A9 at Perth and follow this north.  Leave Perth Racecourse and follow the A93 south into Perth, and follow signs for Inverness (A912/A9).

There are alternative routes via the A93 and A984 to Dunkeld, however turning right onto the A9 at Dunkeld may take a considerable time due to the heavy volume of traffic on the A9.

For all routes, follow the A9 for 8 miles (13kms) north from Dunkeld and leave the A9 at the Ballinluig junction, signposted Aberfeldy A827. At the roundabout at the end of the slip road take the third exit signposted Ballinluig.  After crossing over the A9 turn right into Ballinluig. After the filling station take the next road on the right, signposted to Tulliemet, and follow this minor road, for 2 miles (3kms) to the parking area.
. All competitors must arrive before 1230 hrs. NO EXIT BEFORE 1230 hrs.
