Controller’s statement: Day 2, Kinnoull and Deuchny

A complaint was received about the mapping of paths around control 170. This concerned a path which has appeared since the map was produced. In the knowledge that such paths would be confusing, a comment was made in the Event Programme to warn competitors in advance about the likelihood of new paths in an area very popular with cyclists and walkers. In a big event, small paths can quickly become more obvious.

Control 170 was in an area of bracken – higher than it was a year ago on first visit to the area – which was flattened all around the two boulders when placing the control; the shape of the ground, including the two nearby knolls, was quite visible. One of the controllers revisited the area and confirmed that the control was on the correct feature. Following a discussion with the complainant, the complaint was withdrawn, but nevertheless, it is regretted that competitors lost time following the wrong path.
