Day 5 - Elite update

The sun shone all day at Barry Buddon, and at the end of the race over technically challenging but fast terrain, there was no change at the top of either elite class. Oleg Chepelin and Cecilia Bratt took victory on the day and remain clear leaders of M21E and W21E respectively.

Oleg Chepelin held off Murray Strain by only 16 seconds to win the M21E 7.975km course in 41:17, with Rob Baker (South Yorkshire Orienteers) coming through to take third place in 42:38. In W21E, Cecilia Bratt’s time of 44:09 for 6.425km was almost two minutes faster than Sarah Dunn (Mar OC) in second; Pippa Whitehouse (Cleveland OK) was 5 seconds further behind in third.

Going into the final day’s chasing start, where each competitor will start three minutes apart, Oleg Chepelin has a healthy lead of 4 minutes 46 seconds over Hector Haines in second place and Ian Nixon only 9 seconds further back in third. Carsten Jorgensen’s 24th place on Day 5 has dropped him to fourth overall. Cecilia Bratt will defend a 4 minutes 54 seconds lead over Heather Gardner; 9 minutes further back, Hanna Haugen Nordbroden has moved ahead of Hollie Orr into third place.
