Campervan / Motorhome owners

Categorised under: General Important Where to stay

Due to limited space and likely ground conditions there will be restrictions on where we will be able to handle larger/heavier vehicles like campervans and motorhomes etc.
You must not over-night in any of the car parking fields.

If you are bringing a motorhome and have not received an email asking you to complete a questionnaire please contact info2011@scottish6days.com asap.

If the weather is wet, we might not be able to park them in some day area fields and so we will make special parking / travel arrangements for them, see below.

We definitely can’t accommodate them at the event campsite, so you will need to book into one of the commercial campsites in Oban area. There may be others, but these are the local ones we are aware of.

Roseview Caravan Park, Glenshellach, located 1.3 miles south west of Oban.
A small quiet site but in a very attractive setting.

Seaview Camping & Caravan Park, Benderloch, next to the event campsite, have spaces available for orienteers. So book early for a sea view!

North Ledaig Caravan Club site located 1.2 miles south of the event centre.

Barcaldine Camping and Caravan Club site, located 4 miles north east of the event centre. There is a new cycle path that runs parallel to the A828 between Barcaldine and Benderloch.

Oban Caravan & Camping Park, Gallananch, located 1.4 miles south west of Oban.

Explanation

I’m sure many of you will know that the west coast can be slightly damper than further east and we can’t change this for August 2011.

We are already planning lots of hardcore, matting and digger work to ensure access to many of the fields, so we did not take these decisions lightly. At the moment there are only two of the areas that are able to cope with these vehicles, days 1 & 6.

We are offering a free shuttle bus service to events from the alternative commercial campsites for ‘van campers. People that have already entered and notified us that they are bringing a ‘van have been contacted to find out which site they are on so we can arrange the busses.

There will be a marquee in the assembly area that can be used to get changed and leave kit in for those without a vehicle.

If the weather is very dry for the period before the event it may be that we will be able to relax the restrictions, but we need to plan for the worst.

We realise these decisions may put some people off attending the event, but hope that they will understand the reasons and be prepared to accept some inconvenience for the opportunity to orienteer in some fantastic areas.

Small/medium size van conversions

We have had some comments from smaller vehicle owners (like VW transporter conversions) suggesting that as they are the same size as a car that perhaps they should be exempt. It’s not the size but the weight that is the issue. A conversion can double the weight of the standard van, plus the weight isn’t over the drive wheels so traction suffers.
So any VW Transporter, Transit etc. sized van or larger that has windows in the side panels will be treated as a Campervan/Motorhome (people carriers excepted).
