Some Geological and Topographical Notes

These notes have been written for anybody interested in the rocks and landscapes of the Royal Deeside 2017 competition areas.   Understanding how various map features were formed may add to your enjoyment of running in these great areas, especially afterwards when you have time to examine the maps in detail and reflect on the many curious and sometimes complex landforms represented on them.

Shop opening hours 10am - 4.30pm.

You will find your pre-paid maps in a labelled envelope. A limited number of training maps for all 4 areas will also be on sale at Bike Station at £5 /map (cash only).

Bike Station Ballater are also generously offering 1 week premium bike hire for all 6 day competitors at a reduced fee of £45 instead of the usual £80. Please ask in store for further details.

On 29th July  training maps can be collected and bought from the Event Centre in Ballater. Thereafter please collect your maps from day registration. Training maps will also be on sale at £5 /map. By purchasing a training map you will be supporting the Scottish Elite Development Squad.

Travel Information

Getting Here

Travel to Deeside is straightforward – from the central belt of Scotland either on the A9 or the M90 to Perth, then the A93 north through Braemar to Ballater.

Campsite

Campsite map

An event campsite with capacity for over 750 orienteers will be established in Ballater. The campsite will be sited in flat fields east of Monaltrie Park, home of the Ballater Highland Games. This is a quiet location on the edge of this attractive Victorian village, with fine views to Craigendarroch and Pannanich Hill. The campsite will be signed from the junction of the A93 in Ballater (Braemar Road) and Provost Craig Road.

Scottish 6 Days 2017, Royal Deeside

Birsmore

30th July - 5th August 2017

The 21st Scottish 6-day event is being held in Royal Deeside between the 30th July and 5th August 2017.

This will be the 4th time the 6-Days has come to Deeside (1983, 1993, 2005) and the event will use some of our best areas with a variety of terrain, superb arenas and car parking and stunning views to the hills and mountains around Deeside.

Event Buses

A shuttle bus service will run from near the event campsite in Ballater to the race venues and back on each day of the 6-Days. This is included as part of the entry fees but must be pre-booked through the online entries system for the event.

Dogs are allowed on the buses, here is the advice from the bus company "Dog’s - only well behaved and they must stay on the floor and as near the front as possible to minimise mess".

Dogs at the Event

People considering bringing their dogs to Royal Deeside 2017 should note that at the race venues dogs will only be allowed in the car park area and the event arena, and they must be on a lead at all times.
